Residential Green Roof Applications Workshop
Residential Green Roof Applications is a half-day workshop and design charrette for architects, engineers and landscape architects. The purpose of the event is provide design professionals with the essentials needed to design residential green roof projects and the opportunity to apply what is learned. It is sponsored by Onondaga County Save the Rain and the Green Roof Working Group Advisory Team.

The event will begin with a 90 minute workshop called, "Green Roofs - From the Structure to the Sky" taught by James A. D'Aloisio, P.E., SECB, LEED AP BD+C and Marguerite Wells, Co-Owner Mother Earth Plants. This workshop will allow design professionals to: Understand fundamental structural issues related to green roof design Understand the roofing aspects of green roofs, including waterproofing, insulation, and air barrier performance Understand the options available for green roof growing media, including newly developed products Understand the plant species typically used on green roofs and the variables to their success Understand green roofs as complex systems that combine issues of structure,waterproofing,drainage, media and plants with aspects of micro-climate and design The remainder of the event will be devoted to a design charrette in which participants work in interdisciplinary teams under the guidance of experienced colleagues to create green roof conceptual designs for some local residences and a bus shelter. Each team will present their ideas and receive questions and constructive feedback by colleagues and homeowners.
The design charrette portion of the event will be led by Professor Timothy Toland of SUNY ESF, Dept. of Landscape Architecture with support from Jim D'Aloisio, Amy Samuels, Kyle Thomas and Marguerite Wells. Read more about them below
James A. (Jim) D'Aloisio is a Principal with Klepper, Hahn & Hyatt, a structural engineering, landscape architecture, and building science firm in Syracuse, NY. A graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Mr. D'Aloisio is a Registered Professional Engineer (NY and MA), Certified by the Structural Engineering Certification Board (SECB), a LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP BD+C), and a GPRO (Green Professionals Contractor Training) instructor. Jim is chair of the ASCE Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) Sustainability Committee.
Amy Samuels is the Education and Outreach Coordinator at Onondaga Environmental Institute. Ms. Samuels received a B.S. from Cornell University, a M.S. in Science Education from Syracuse University and a M.S. in Plant Ecology from SUNY ESF. Her main focus is on developing and implementing programs related to water resources, stormwater management, green infrastructure and community engagement. Ms. Samuels is part of a team of educators chosen to design and deliver education and outreach for Onondaga County's Save the Rain Campaign.
Kyle E. Thomas is the Principal of Natural Systems Engineering, PLLC (NSE), an environmental engineering firm in Syracuse, NY specializing in green infrastructure and watershed protection. A graduate of SUNY College of Environmental Science & Forestry, Mr. Thomas has designed five extensive green roofs under Onondaga County's Save the Rain program since 2011, and is currently designing several other green roofs scheduled for construction in 2013. Kyle is a Registered Professional Engineer (NY), a LEED Accredited Professional (BD+C), and serves on the Sustainable Sites Technical Advisory Group (TAG) for the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).
Tim Toland is an Associate Professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF) in Syracuse, NY. He holds an Associate’s Degree in Landscape Development (1992) and a Bachelor’s in Plant Science (1994) from SUNY Cobleskill, as well as a Master’s in Landscape Architecture (1998) from SUNY-ESF. He is a versatile teacher, leading several courses, including plant identification, planting design, construction materials, graphics (hand and digital), as well as a number of design studios. His teaching and scholarship builds upon his work in practice. As a licensed landscape architect (NY, NC, OH), he has extensive practice experience working on a wide variety of municipal, institutional and private projects. This includes work on campus planning and design projects, transit and urban planning projects, large scale master plans, greenway planning projects, streetscape designs, site planning and detailed design projects, and garden designs. Mr. Toland is broadly skilled in design theory, technical applications, digital production, and project management. As a LEED-Accredited Professional, he incorporates issues of sustainability in all of his work, seeking to balance the complexities of environmentally sensitive design. His scholarly and design pursuits seek to understand and optimize the performance of human and natural systems to reduce environmental impacts while meeting design goals.
Marguerite Wells is co-owner of Motherplants, a nursery in Ithaca specializing in the plants and soils for green roofs. In business for 8 years, with hundreds of roofs installed with her plants, the projects range from small homeowner projects to large commercial roofs, from Alabama to Maine. Also a member of the Horticulture Department at Cornell, Marguerite has spent her life growing plants of all kinds. She graduated from Cornell with her B.S., and got her Masters in Environmental Sustainability from the University of Edinburgh, UK in 2001. Marguerite is an active member of Green Roofs for Healthy Cities, a non-profit industry association. *Continuing Education credits have been applied for.
